Portrait or Personal Image - Gregory R Kluempers

Greg bought his first 35mm camera in 1970. Shortly after that he enrolled at Florissant Valley to study art. He found the photography classes to be very stimulating. These classes emphasized composition and the use of photography for creative expression. At that time only black and white processing was available. In 1972 Greg participated in his first show at Florissant Valley with 10 other students.
For a number of reasons he did not pursue a career as a photographer, even though he seriously considered it. Greg read about, studied and continued to take photos throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. In the late 80s he went on some trips to California and the Southwest United States where he experienced many of the sights that early photographers made famous. This inspired him to increase his photography activities. In 1999 Greg returned to Florissant Valley at night to complete an Associates Degree in Photography. Each semester he took a photography class and other art classes so that he could use the college’s darkroom to sharpen his skills.
Greg has always wanted his own darkroom, but because of the expense, he never built one. Also, he found that darkroom photography was becoming very limiting. There are only a few things you can do with film and an enlarger in the amount of time he had available. With the advances in scanning and digital printing, he recently put together a digital darkroom. He has spent the last year or so working to develop his skill with straight printing. Recently he began to experiment with a variety of manipulations using Photoshop. This is opening another creative area that he is excited about exploring.
Greg is an active member of Art St. Louis, St. Louis Artist’s Guild, Art Dimensions, Chesterfield Arts, and The Foundry Art Center. While maintaining a full time job at a local firm, since 2001 he has participated in approximately 60 juried-shows, multiple-artist exhibits, one-person shows and art fairs in Missouri.
